Established in 1990, the James S. Armstrong Alumni Service Award is presented to an alumnus in recognition of outstanding and extraordinary service, leadership, loyalty, commitment, and significant contribution to the University in broad and varied roles.
The award honors James S. Armstrong ’54, ’65 (MA) who served the University from 1976 to 1987 as director of alumni relations.
More than 50 years ago, Peter Standish led a rally at the University of Rochester to improve the quality of undergraduate education. It was clear then that he was a natural leader, and that quality has benefitted him as an attorney and as a volunteer for the University. A trustee since 1995, he was a key member of several Board committees, including external affairs, health affairs, and the presidential search that resulted in hiring Joel Seligman. Still a leader to the Class of ’64, he has continued to rally his classmates’ engagement and support by serving on his 40th, 45th, and 50th reunion committees. A mentor to young alumni, he co-chairs the New York New Leaders Cabinet in support of The Meliora Challenge: The Campaign for the University of Rochester. Dedicated to providing educational opportunities for promising young people, he and his wife established the Peter and Lenore Standish Scholarship Fund to support students of Arts, Sciences & Engineering. Peter Standish has been a remarkable leader at the University of Rochester, and it is with great appreciation and admiration that this award is given.
