The Director’s Award recognizes extraordinary service, philanthropy, and leadership to the Eastman Institute for Oral Health and the University of Rochester, as well as dedication and commitment that inspire others to serve.
Known for his extraordinary dedication to his alma mater, Bill Calnon is a leader among leaders. In 2012, when the need arose for an acting director, he stepped up to serve, even though he was simultaneously running his own private practice, leading our foundation board, and serving as president of the American Dental Association. As our acting director, he did more than simply mark time; he forged relationships, recruited board members, met with alumni, and listened with one goal in mind: moving the Eastman Institute for Oral Health forward. Having long been involved in professional dental organizations at the local, state, and national levels, he has learned a tremendous amount about dentistry around the world and has used this knowledge to improve our institute. An advocate for mentoring, he understands the importance of conveying his insight to young professionals as well as learning from those who have come before him. We are remarkably proud of Bill Calnon’s professional accomplishments, and it is with heartfelt gratitude for his leadership and loyalty that this honor is bestowed.
