Dr. Elizabeth Bruno is president of the Brady Education Foundation and a research associate professor in the Developmental Psychology Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has published several articles on early education environments, family circumstances, and child outcomes.
After graduating from the University of Rochester in 1989 with a degree in psychology, she continued her education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned her master’s degree in child clinical psychology in 1992 and her Ph.D. in developmental psychology in 1998.
She began her academic career as an instructor in the psychology department at Chapel Hill and became a scientist in the university’s Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. In this role, her main research focus was on early care and education environments and school readiness skills of at-risk children. Her work included the investigation of the long-term outcomes of the Abecedarian Project (an early educational intervention for children at high risk for poor cognitive and academic outcomes); the exploration of the associations among race, income, parenting, childcare quality and language development and school readiness; and the investigation of factors that influence why and how parents search for and select child care. She became president of the Brady Education Foundation in 2001 and serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Marriage and Family and Early Childhood Research Quarterly, the Frank Porter Graham Executive Leadership Board, as well as a number of other nonprofit boards.
An active University of Rochester alumna, Dr. Bruno has served on the Arts, Sciences & Engineering National Council since 2011 and was a career services volunteer in 2010. She is also a member of the George Eastman Circle, the University’s leadership annual giving society. In 2011, she established a support fund to help students in the University’s Early Connection Opportunity (ECO) program, and a fellowship fund for master’s degree students who are alumni of the ECO program.
