Dr. Lawrence F. Nazarian is a clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and a clinical teacher in the Resident Continuity Clinic at Strong Memorial Hospital. After nearly four decades as a practicing pediatrician in the Rochester community, he expanded his role as a medical journal editor in 2005, and today serves as the editor emeritus of Pediatrics in Review.
A graduate of Yale College, Dr. Nazarian earned his bachelor’s degree in 1960 before pursuing medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. After receiving his medical degree in 1964, Dr. Nazarian completed pediatric residencies at Strong Memorial Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital. He served as a medical officer in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969 before beginning his career in pediatrics in Rochester.
Following his military service, Dr. Nazarian joined Rochester’s Panorama Pediatric Group in 1969, where he remained until mid-2004. He also returned to the School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1969, this time as a clinical faculty member. In 1988, Dr. Nazarian assumed his current role as clinical professor of pediatrics and has taught at nearly every level, from first year medical students to continuing medical education presentations for seasoned clinicians. He has served as a preceptor in the Resident Continuity Clinic at Strong Memorial Hospital, and has led a variety of teaching sessions for residents and medical students. A versatile educator, Dr. Nazarian has taught in his office, on the wards, in classrooms, and at medical centers around the country and abroad. While in practice, Dr. Nazarian was associate editor of Pediatrics in Review, an international journal published by the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2005, he became editor-in-chief, a position he held through 2012.
A proud alumnus and longstanding supporter of the University of Rochester, Dr. Nazarian’s philanthropy has made a lasting impact, benefiting institutions like the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Golisano Children’s Hospital, and the James P. Wilmot Cancer Institute, among others. He served as the giving chair for his 50th class reunion, and in 2003 was named the Gold Medal Award recipient by the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Dr. Nazarian has remained active in both the medical and Rochester communities. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Medical Society of Monroe County, the Medical Society of the State of New York, and the Rochester Academy of Medicine, and is the former president of the Rochester Pediatric Society.Dr. Nazarian has also worked with a number of community organizations including his church, the Boy Scouts of America, the James P. Wilmot Cancer Foundation for cancer research, Heritage Christian Services, the Browncroft Day Care Center, and the Medical Alumni Council of the University of Rochester.
He and his wife Sharon live in Penfield, New York. They have three children and ten grandchildren.
