Peter Standish is a retired partner of the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges, where he spent 36 years. His practice included all areas of antitrust and trade regulation, ranging from criminal grand juries to distribution and marketing, with a focus on merger and acquisition work.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Rochester in 1964 and his J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 1967. He joined Weil, Gotshal & Manges the same year and eventually gained substantial expertise in international competition matters. From 1990 to 1992, Standish served as the resident partner in charge of the firm’s London office, where his practice included advising European clients on U.S. competition law and advising U.S. and European clients on European Community law.
A past chairman of the Trade Regulation Committee of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, he has published numerous articles on trade regulation and antitrust matters and has also lectured widely on these subjects. He chaired the Practicing Law Institute (P.L.I.) program on distribution and marketing and was a regular lecturer at the P.L.I. Advanced Antitrust Seminar and the ABA Antitrust Section. He was a guest lecturer at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and Columbia University’s School of Business. His work has been recognized in Chambers Guides and the International Financial Law Review.
A University of Rochester Life Trustee, he has served on the Board of Trustees’ External Affairs and Health Affairs Committees as well as his 40th, 45th, and 50threunion committees. He currently is co-chair of the New York New Leaders Regional Cabinet. With his wife, Lenore Shaw Standish, he established the Peter and Lenore Standish Scholarship Fund in 2011 in support of undergraduate students of Arts, Sciences & Engineering. The Standishes are Charter Members of the George Eastman Circle, the University’s leadership giving society, and founding members of the Wilson Society, which celebrates individuals who have made a planned gift to the University.
Peter and Lenore Standish live in New York City and have three children and two grandsons.
